GETTING STARTED IN JUNIOR SHOWMANSHIP

The American Kennel Club licenses dogs shows (competitive exhibitions in which dogs are judged in accordance with an established standard of perfection for each breed) that test and evaluate the form and function of purebred dogs.
In addition, at some shows the AKC offers classes which evaluate the abilities of the participant on the other end of the lead, the young handler.
AKC Junior Showmanship classes offer youngsters the opportunity to:

Develop their handling skills
Learn about good sportsmanship
Learn about dogs and dog shows

JUNIOR SHOWMANSHIP

Junior Showmanship is a class for youngsters 10 to 18 years of age. The class is evaluated on the handling of the dog as the breed would be presented in the conformation ring. Juniors are also encouraged to participate with their dogs in the Performance Events. Currently in Obedience, Agility, Lure Coursing, Herding, Earthdog and Tracking, Juniors are acknowledged for successfully handling their dog to a title. There is not a minimum age to compete in the Performance classes. The Junior must be able to handle the dog to complete the requirements for the class.

Junior Showmanship represents the future of the sport of dogs. From its ranks will come tomorrow’s club leaders, as well as the future responsible breeders of purebred dogs.

Juniors may receive a number to be eligible to compete in these events by contacting AKC’s Junior Showmanship department.
